This unit of competency outlines the mandatory work health and safety (WHS) training required before a person can undertake construction work. It focuses on developing an understanding of relevant health and safety laws and the knowledge needed to work safely and minimise the risk of injury to themselves and others. The unit includes recognising and verbally reporting common construction hazards, applying basic risk control measures, and following appropriate procedures for workplace incidents and emergencies. It also covers the correct selection, fitting, and use of common personal protective equipment (PPE) used in construction environments.

Licensing, legislative, regulatory, and certification requirements may apply to this unit. Participants should refer to the relevant state or territory work health and safety (WHS) regulatory authority to confirm the specific requirements that apply in their jurisdiction.

The White Card course covers the following key areas:

• Identify health and safety legislative requirements of construction work
• Identify construction hazards and risk control measures
• Identify health and safety communication and reporting processes
• Identify incident and emergency response procedures

Upon successful completion of the White Card course, participants will be able to:

• Understand their WHS responsibilities when undertaking construction work.
• Recognise common construction hazards and understand basic risk control measures.
• Follow appropriate workplace safety, communication and reporting procedures.
• Respond appropriately to workplace incidents and emergencies.
• Correctly select, fit and use common personal protective equipment (PPE).

Participants must:

• Be at least 14 years of age.
• Complete the required enrolment documentation and provide a valid Unique Student Identifier (USI).
• Complete the required Language, Literacy, Numeracy and Digital (LLND) assessment.
• Provide 100 points of Evidence of Identity (EOI) in accordance with SafeWork NSW requirements.
• Have access to a suitable device with a working camera and microphone and a reliable internet connection.
• Have a suitable learning environment that allows them to participate in the training and assessment without interruption.
• Remain visible via camera as required throughout the live training and assessment session.

Students must provide a minimum of 100 points of Evidence of Identity (EOI) in accordance with SafeWork NSW requirements before commencing training.

Students must have their required original Evidence of Identity documents available and present them to the trainer as part of the online identity verification process, in accordance with SafeWork NSW requirements. Photocopies and certified copies are not accepted.

The combination of identification documents must include the participant’s photograph, date of birth and signature.

Students who are unable to provide the required 100 points of EOI will not be permitted to commence training and will need to reschedule to another available course date. Applicable rescheduling fees may apply.

Participants are required to have:

• The required 100 points of Evidence of Identity (EOI)
• Their Unique Student Identifier (USI) or USI details
• A computer, laptop or suitable device with a working camera and microphone
• A reliable internet connection
• Access to Zoom
• A suitable learning environment where they can participate without interruption
• The following PPE for the practical demonstration:
  • Hi-vis vest, shirt or jacket
  • Hard hat
  • Ear plugs or ear muffs
  • Safety glasses or safety goggles
• Any additional items or documentation specified in the booking confirmation

As part of the assessment, participants will be required to demonstrate the correct selection, fitting and use of the specified PPE during the live Zoom during the live Zoom session.

Delivery Method: Live, real-time training via Zoom
Duration: 1 Day Course

Participants must attend and actively participate in the entire trainer-led Zoom session and successfully complete all required training and assessment activities.

Zoom access details and instructions will be provided before the scheduled training session

Participants are required to successfully complete all required knowledge and practical assessment activities during the live Zoom session. Participants must actively participate, remain visible to the trainer as required, and follow all instructions relating to identity verification, training and assessment.

Participants who successfully complete the White Card training and assessment will receive a Statement of Training (SOT) on the day of successful completion. The SOT can be used as evidence that the General Construction Induction Training has been completed while the White Card is being processed and is valid for 60 days from the date of issue.

Following successful completion, the participant’s application details are submitted to SafeWork NSW, which issues the General Construction Induction Card (White Card). Most White Cards are issued in less than 30 days.

Completion of this course provides participants with general construction induction training and supports entry into the construction industry. Participants may choose to undertake further training relevant to their role, such as Working at Heights, Confined Spaces or Elevated Work Platform training.
