Course Description

This course provides practical training for individuals working in education and care settings to effectively respond to first aid emergencies, including those related to asthma and anaphylaxis, in compliance with legal and workplace standards, Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines, and other national clinical bodies in Australia. It is designed for early childhood workers and educators working with school-age children in before and after school care programs, as well as vacation programs.
Participants will learn to identify illnesses or injuries, contact emergency services, and administer first aid safely using action plans, equipment, and resources. The course covers essential topics such as CPR, defibrillation, the use of autoinjectors for anaphylaxis, asthma medication administration, and immobilization techniques for envenomation, fractures, dislocations, sprains, strains, and the management of bleeding, shock, and other conditions.
Additionally, the course includes an overview of basic anatomy and physiology, distinctions in CPR techniques for adults, children, and infants, and the management of acute illnesses in infants or children requiring immediate ambulance response. It also covers how to communicate incident details effectively to parents, caregivers, and emergency services.
Participants will also learn to complete incident documentation, conduct debriefings to improve response protocols, recognize psychological impacts, communicate with children about their emotions, and facilitate appropriate help-seeking behaviors.
